UK: Would a Labour government change something in the UK?

The current situation in Britain is comparable with the situation in the late 1970s. The government is in turmoil, while strikes are blocking the whole country.

Then it was a Labour government which was blown away because of the "winter of discontent" 1978/'79. Margaret Thatcher came to power and wiped away the influence of the unions.

Now it is Tory Prime Minister Sunak who is facing a similar crisis that - beside the Brexit aftermaths - might cost him his job in the next elections. Whether the manifold strikes, especially in the NHS, will change politics, cannot yet be foreseen.

In any case, Brexit has changed the situation for the British economy forever. There are now some voices being heard that demand the return to the European common market. But that's impossible without a complete return to the EU.

Would a future Labour government initiate a turnback towards Brussels? I doubt it.

It is more likely that Scotland will become independent from the UK than there would be a British reentry to the European Union. But a future, more conciliatory left wing Prime Minister might tie closer relations to Brussels. Whatever happens, it is clear now that no other country will follow Britain's footsteps and leave the EU. Because it has been shown that this has a major impact on the national economy.

Nevertheless, the fact that Britain has left the EU, is still a shame.
