Dear USA. What is going on in your country?

Dear USA.

For decades, you were the shining example for our country and our continent.

You taught us democracy.

You helped building us up again after two terrible world wars.

You gave us Hollywood movies, Rock’n’Roll, Hip Hop, Blue Jeans and Coca Cola.

You set the tone in our society.

You were the Land of the Free.

And now?

You have voted for a president who doesn’t care for democratic institutions.

A president with German roots. Roots for which I’m ashamed.

When I first visited your country some years ago, I took a taxi from the airport to my hotel.

When I saw kids playing basketball in back streets, I knew that I was in the US.

How excited I was!

You are the oldest democracy in the world.

You had the chance to go with a black woman into the future. You decided yourself for the past.

I hope that your country and Germany and Europe as an ally will get over Mr. Trump’s presidency in four years.

Let’s hope for the best.
