When I was in New York, I mostly listened to CBS-FM on 101.1 FM.
It broadcasts with a power of 4 kilowatts from the Empire
State Building, and it plays classic hits and oldies. Nowadays it isn’t that much
fun to listen to as they play the same 70s and 80s over and over again without
all the great DJs that were around in the past. But on YouTube and Soundcloud
you can find great airchecks from then.
I think it used to be CBS’s flagship station in New York („owned
and operated“), but as it happens so often, CBS Radio has been sold. The other big
networks NBC and ABC have sold their radio business years ago. Does Fox have radio
stations? I don’t know.
Hot97 (hip hop, urban) and Z100 (current hits) are the other stations I liked. When I was there, WPLJ on 95.5 played adult contemporary. I think they now moved to a somewhat christian music format. I remember a station called Jammin‘ 105 which doesn’t exist any more, as well.
If you wanna know about powerful men and women in the North American
radio business, you’ve got to listen to Kid Kelly on Z100 from the 90s. Scott
Shannon’s syndicated show Rockin America can be listened to online again, as
well. Rosalie Trombley from CKLW Windsor, Ontario (Canada) is portrayed in the 1973
song „Rosalie“ by Bob Seger. She was the station manager there broadcasting
over the border to Detroit where people like Seger would listen to her unique choice
of hits.
